Outdoor lighting covers a lot of ground, solar path lights, festoon string lights, wall-mounted security lights, worth thinking about what you actually need it for rather than just going on looks.
Solar vs Mains
Solar lights are the easiest option, no wiring at all, but how well it performs depends on how much sun it actually gets, and that drops off a fair bit in winter. Mains-wired lights are more reliable for brightness, but anything beyond swapping a fitting really needs an electrician.
String Lights and Security Lights
String and festoon lights are great for atmosphere when you're entertaining, just check the IP rating if they're staying up permanently rather than just for occasions. Security lights (usually PIR, motion-sensor) are about function over looks, check the detection range and brightness rather than how it looks on the wall.
Post and pathway lights are really just about safety, marking steps or the edge of a path in the dark. Low-level solar's usually enough for that, you don't need mains power for it.
Frequently asked questions
Do solar lights actually work well in the UK?
They do work, but output drops in winter with less daylight around. Mains-wired is more reliable if the lighting actually matters somewhere.
What does the IP rating on outdoor lights mean?
It's a rating for how well it copes with dust and water. IP44 or higher's generally what you want if it's staying outside permanently.
Do I need an electrician for outdoor lighting?
Not for solar, no wiring involved. Anything mains-powered, wall lights, hardwired security lights, should go through a proper electrician.
