A garden dining set's one of those things you don't want to get wrong, it's usually out there for years, and prices for what looks like the same set can vary a lot more than you'd think between retailers.
Shape and Size
Round tables are good if you've got a smaller patio, everyone's roughly the same distance from the middle and nobody's stuck at the far end. If you're regularly having people over, a rectangular or extending set is probably the better bet, more room for extra plates when you need it.
Materials
Rattan and aluminium show up again and again here, same reasons as anywhere else outdoors, light, doesn't rot, doesn't need much looking after. Timber, teak especially, looks better for longer if you're willing to oil it once a year, otherwise it'll grey off pretty quick.
Chairs are easy to overlook when you're looking at photos of the table. Stacking ones are handy if storage's tight, but if you're sitting out there for a proper meal, cushioned chairs make a real difference.
Worth double-checking how many the table actually seats once plates, glasses and elbows are involved, "seats 6" on the box doesn't always feel like 6 once you're sat there.

Depends who you're feeding really, round's nicer for a smaller group and easier conversation, rectangular or extending suits bigger families or people who host a lot.
What material's going to last the longest outside?
Aluminium and rattan need the least fuss. Teak looks the best if you keep on top of it, but it does need that yearly oiling or it'll go grey on you.
Do I need cushions for the chairs?
Most sets come with a thin pad, but if you're planning long dinners out there rather than a quick lunch, it's worth adding proper cushions.
